Daily 5
Everyday, students are working independently in Daily 5 stations while I am working with small groups on specific skills or individual conferencing. Students are responsible for staying on-task in these stations to practice the skills that make us better readers and writers. Sometimes students stay with a group and travel to specific stations and sometimes students have a choice. Here are some of the Daily 5 options that students choose from:
Read to Self - students read a "just right" book of their choice. Students should always have a fiction, a non-fiction, and a fun read in their book bag to choose from during read to self time.
Read to Partner - students pair up and share a book that they are currently reading or have recently read. Students may read a page or two to their partner, then share their reactions or connections to the book.
Work on Writing - students work on the writing projects that we are working on in class or may work on independent writing in their writer's notebooks.
Word Work - students work with our spelling words in a variety of activities. Students have a bingo chart that they are trying to fill in as many boxes of activities as they can in a month.
Listen to Reading - students listen to a recording of a fluent reader while following along.
Work with Teacher - small groups will be meeting with me for focused instruction at their instructional reading level. We will be practicing the reading strategies from our full group lesson with individualized coaching.

Writing
Students work on a variety of writing projects at one time so that they have options when working in their Work on Writing station.
Reciprocal Teaching
We practice the Fab Four strategies as part of the Reciprocal Teaching model. We have met our Fab Four characters who help us to remember the strategies we use while reading. These strategies are good for readers at ALL levels to practice and students will recognize these strategies being used in upper grades too. Below is a video introducing each of the Reciprocal Teaching characters.
